Memorable holiday looks start with fabulous holiday makeup that turns heads for all the right reasons. So go ahead and try out the latest trends, but keep your makeup age-appropriate and flattering rather than overpowering. Here’s how …
#1) Avoid overkill. If your dress features bold prints and far-out colors, keep your makeup subdued. Conversely, if your attire is understated, let your makeup reflect your holiday spirit. In short, your face and outfit should not compete for attention.
#2) Exfoliate first. As the canvas for your makeup, your complexion should be smooth and fresh. So be sure to slough off any flakes or signs of dryness with a favorite scrub. You can also opt for a homemade scrub by adding brown sugar to olive oil for a soft, supple finish.
#3) Don’t forget to exfoliate your lips, too, using Vaseline and an exfoliating brush to eliminate flakes and plump up cracks and wrinkles.
#4) Want to shimmer in your holiday cocktail attire? Go for it! But remember that too much of a good thing is … well … too much. If you’re sporting shimmery eyelids and lips, forgo the shimmery highlighter on cheeks, nose and décolletage.
#5) Camouflage dark circles and creases with highlighter. Bend your head down to see where shadows are cast. Then dab on and blend in highlighter under the eyes and along facial creases running from nose to mouth and mouth to chin.
#6) Emphasize mouth OR eyes, as the focal point of your face. If you’re doing dark, smoky eyes, don’t detract from them with bright red lipstick. And if you’re accentuating your lips with a bright color plus gloss, use your eye colors with a very light touch so you don’t end up looking tacky.
#7) To keep your lipstick from fading over the course of a long night, use a similar shade to line lips and fill in. Then set with powder and apply another layer on top.
#8) Don’t neglect your brows. In fact, let professionals tweeze and shape them. And to keep them in place, apply a dab of hairspray with your finger tip.
#9) To complete your holiday transformation, don’t neglect the mani and pedi. But forget about acrylic nails, because today short is chic. Choose a festive shade of rose, red or plum, and even consider some sparkles on thumb or pinky.
#10) Lastly, make an elegant statement with your jewelry. If you’re wearing bold drop earrings and a band of bracelets, don’t go from tasteful to tasteless with a large necklace and bevy of finger rings. Remember, less is more.
